What Makes Radicaln Different
Description
A full-size marble board doesn't fit every table — this one is built for the ones it doesn't. This black and fossil coral marble chess set has a compact 12-inch board that suits smaller tables, shelves, and tighter spaces, while still being solid natural stone. The board is black-dominant, with light squares of fossil coral marble — a stone carrying the fossilised markings of ancient coral, so the light squares aren't a flat colour but a natural pattern. At 7.3 pounds it has real stone weight without the bulk of the 15-inch set, and no two boards carry the same markings.
12" × 12" board · 1" squares · 32 marble pieces · king 2.75" · 7.3 lb · felt-backed board & pieces · black-dominant with fossil coral marble · free US shipping · 30-day returns
What's included: 1 × 12-inch black & fossil coral marble board (attached felt base) · 32 hand-carved Staunton pieces — 2 kings, 2 queens, 4 bishops, 4 knights, 4 rooks, 16 pawns · individual felt bottoms for all 32 pieces · RADICALn fragile-safe packaging · piece-replacement service.
What makes this black & fossil coral marble chess set different
A compact 12-inch board
At 12 inches, this is the smaller of our two board sizes — it fits a side table, a shelf, or a smaller room where the 15-inch board would crowd the space, and it's easier to move and store at 7.3 pounds. It's still solid natural stone, just scaled for tighter spaces. (Want the larger board? See the 15-inch version.)
Fossil coral marble — a patterned natural stone
The light stone is fossil coral marble, which carries the fossilised markings of ancient coral — small ring- and flower-like patterns set into the stone. It's what separates this from a plain black-and-white: the light squares and pieces have a natural pattern with real geological history, and no two carry the same markings.
Black-dominant board
The board leads with black — a black field and border — with the patterned fossil coral squares set into it. The dark ground makes the fossil markings stand out and gives the board a warmer, more characterful look than stark black-and-white.
Full playing pieces, scaled to the board
The 32 pieces are sized for the 12-inch board: the king stands 2.75 inches, the queen 2.5, down to 2-inch pawns, on 1-inch squares. They're still solid stone with weight in the hand — a proper set to play on, just proportioned for the smaller board.
Felt-protected board and pieces
The board has an attached felt base, and every one of the 32 pieces comes with its own felt bottom (included in a separate packet). The felt keeps the board from scratching your table and stops the stone pieces scuffing each other and the board during play.
Backed by a piece-replacement service
Stone can chip if a piece is dropped on a hard floor. If that happens, RADICALn will source a matching replacement in the same black or fossil coral marble — so a single damaged piece doesn't retire the set.
Marble vs the usual chess sets
| Marble (this) | Wood | Plastic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid stone, fits smaller tables | Yes — 12", 7.3 lb | Varies | Light, hollow |
| Distinctive natural pattern | Yes — fossil markings | Grain only | None |
| Stays out as decor | Yes — natural stone | Often | Rarely |
| Each set unique | Yes — natural stone | Grain varies | Identical |
| Felt-protected board & pieces | Yes — board + all 32 | Sometimes | Rarely |
The honest trade-off: a marble set costs more than wood or plastic, and even at 12 inches this is stone — 7.3 pounds, and the pieces can chip on a hard knock like any natural stone. The 12-inch board also gives you smaller pieces than the 15-inch set, which some players find less commanding to play on. What you get is a solid stone set with a patterned fossil coral board that fits where a full-size set won't.

How to care for your marble chess set
- Set the board on a flat surface — its weight keeps it stable once placed.
- Handle the pieces by the body, not the fine tops, which are the most delicate part of any carved stone piece.
- Wipe board and pieces with a soft, dry or barely-damp cloth; skip soap and harsh cleaners.
- Store the pieces wrapped or in a lined box so they don't knock against each other.
Note: natural stone is porous — keep it dry, and don't let liquids sit on the board.
Materials and craftsmanship
Every piece and board square is hand-carved and hand-polished from natural marble — black marble for the dark pieces and board field, fossil coral marble for the light pieces and squares. Fossil coral is a natural stone bearing the fossilised remains of ancient coral, which gives the light squares their distinctive ring- and flower-like markings. Because the stone is natural, that pattern varies from set to set.
A note on natural stone: no two sets match, and yours won't be a pixel-perfect copy of the photo. That variation — and the fossil markings — is the stone, not a flaw. Marble is porous by nature, which is why the surfaces are polished and why the set should be kept dry.
Care instructions
- Wipe with a soft, dry or barely-damp cloth. Skip soap, which porous stone can absorb.
- Keep it dry — don't let liquids stand on the board.
- Handle pieces by the body, not the carved tops.
- Store pieces protected — wrapped or in a lined box so edges don't chip.
- Don't let acids sit on the stone; they can etch marble.
- Lift the board, don't drag it — even at 7.3 pounds it can scuff a surface if slid.
Who this is for
- Smaller tables and tighter spaces where a 15-inch board would crowd the room.
- Anyone who wants natural stone without the full bulk and weight of the larger set.
- Anyone drawn to fossil coral and natural stone with visible geological history.
- Gift buyers — a compact marble set is a substantial but manageable gift, and the fossil coral makes it distinctive.
Good for: housewarmings, weddings, and Christmas or milestone gifts.
