This coaster has a unique look and the way the light hits the natural stone makes it look different from different angles. We really like the natural features and each piece must be different so it feels kind of special. The cork is removeable in case you want to use it in some other way, like as a jewelry dish, and you want the natural stone to show. There is some coating on it that keeps it shiny but still lets the light through. I don't know what would happen if it had liquid on it that sat for a long time, but the cork should absorb the condensation. Mine has a non-skid foam backing glued to the base that is not removeable (though the description says it is felt but it's not on this one at least). The coaster is larger than most wine or champagne bottles, which is good because I think if you set down a bottle onto the edge with some force, you might chip the stone. This coaster has extra room in case your aim is off a bit by the time the bottle is almost empty. The weight, style, smoothness, and versatility makes this a good gift for housewarming or as a hostess gift.
